Integrated Offender Management
At the start of 2023, The Arukah Project was thrilled to receive funding from South Central Probation to launch a pilot initiative focused on supporting Integrated Offender Management (IOM) cases in the Portsmouth, Southampton, and Reading areas. To begin the project, the Arukah team held an online engagement session with around 15 Probation staff members, where they provided an overview of the pilot, highlighted the benefits of the Arukah approach, and discussed referral pathways.
To deliver this work, Arukah established a partnership with the Society of Saint James (SSJ) IOM team and work began to schedule activities across their 3 houses; Portsmouth, Gosport and Southampton. Planning also started to deliver sessions within Southampton (non-SSJ clients) and for a female-only IOM session in Reading. Outside of the SSJ partnership, the success of the initiative relied on the probation teams in Reading and Southampton identifying suitable referrals to attend classroom-based activi however, in preparation for delivery a detailed breakdown of the IOM cases in Southampton was conducted. It was discovered that out of the 69 cases across Southampton, Eastleigh, and The New Forest: 25 individuals were back in custody and 44 individuals were in the community. Among the 44 individuals in the community: 6 were about to be discharged, 6 were employed and the remaining were complex such as addiction, homelessness, and significant mental health challenges. Due to the complexity, it was decided to focus delivery activity back on the SSJ IMO team in Portsmouth.
A series of classroom-based sessions were run across Portsmouth and Southampton to which SSJ staff and IOM clients attended. Due to the pilot nature of the work, feedback was continuously sought to understand literacy levels, content and subjective understanding. Measuring the impact of the work that we do is incredibly important for us and research forms an important part of our delivery as we endeavour to cocreate our service offerings. After the initial classroom-based sessions and teaching were completed, a couple of the men wanted to have some 1-2-1 support and were provided with dedicated EFT coaching.
Verbal and written feedback from the IOM clients:
“Yes I will try this technique when stressed next”
“well presented and easy to understand”
“Better than I was expecting“
“Didn't know what I was coming to but I really enjoyed it”
“Definitely using tapping. It chilled me out”
“I have shown my brother some of the tapping and am off to my brother's to teach my niece's how to tap”
“Finding new ways to calm myself down”
Feedback from Kate, Senior IOM support worker at the Society of Saint James “Personally the first time I tried it, I felt silly… but with the guidance of Aga was able to approach with an open mind and experienced a shift in motivation with reduced anxiety. I practice in times of stress and also as a preventative at nighttime. Aga told me you do not have to believe in it, you do not have to adjust or focus on your thinking, it’s scientific”
Workshop feedback
“Looking forward to practising”
“Good language, easy to follow”
“I could use this with clients”
“It was useful to put the learning into practice”
“Very active and appropriate humour which was engaging”
We would like to express our thanks to South Central Probation and the Society of St James for supporting us with this pivotal pilot work.
